Jack pyke sure fit shooters gloves

These gloves come in one size which is great if like me you haven't got a clue whether a small, medium or large glove fits your hand.
The come in English Oak camouflage pattern. They are very thin which I find great to give you the extra sensitivity in your hands you need when gun handling.
They have thumb and palm rubber dot grip which is also amazing for handling your gun although I have noticed they mark the bluing on your rifle but its only temporary markings as it has disappeared with in an hour or so.
All-in-all a great little product and I would never embark on any hunting trip with out a pair in my pocket or game bag.

New shoot day1

Today was my first trip to a new shoot permission. I arrived at ten o'clock to meet the landowner and go through the usual routine, what can be shot? what can be? where are the boundaries? where to park the car?
where not to go? etc..
I soon realised the landowner didn't know a lot about the air gunning and the way things should be done. He is expecting big numbers which is often not the case with air-gunning. He also asked for squirrels to be controlled on a lane which is a public footpath and used by a lot of dog walkers, so by law this cannot be done.
I am allowed to shoot rabbits, rats and squirrels. He doesn't see pigeons as a problem so I'm concentrating on the above three. He also asked me to control foxes, I explained to him that foxes do not qualify as airgun quarry and as he is only allowing me to use the airgun for the time being the foxes will have to wait until he lets me use different methods in the future.
The landowner gave me a map with the boundaries highlighted on the back was my permission letter, he gave me a photocopy and the original document a copy to keep at home and a copy to keep in the car.

BSA Lightening XL Tactical .22

This rifle comes in .22, .177 and .25 calibres and weighs just 6.7lbs. Its overall length is is just thirty seven inches making it a fairly compact rifle and has a barrel length of just ten inches. The lightning XL has an average velocity of 608 feet per second using RWS Superdome pellets with an energy of 11.9ft/lb. All this and its only priced at around £255 and is also available in a beech stock for a little bit more.
The stock type of the BSA is a synthetic sporter which is made from hi-impact polymer and was designed by John Sykes.
The imprinted logo sorry the pics not to good

notice the cheek piece, logo and recoil pad

safety catch and two stage trigger

Thumb indentations
The guns features include a rubber recoil pad on the stock and a surprisingly comfortable cheek piece. Studs which are already attached to the stock and barrel ready for you to add your swivels and gun sling. The BSA also has an adjustable two stage trigger, built in BSA sound moderator making this rifle very quiet indeed, a very comfortable thumb and fore finger indentations on the stock and an easy push safety catch which can be pushed from your shooting position just by moving your trigger finger. All feature combined together make the BSA LIghtning XL an absolute pleasure to shoot.
The BSA logo is imprinted into the stock in two places and engraved along the barrel are the words "BSA UK LTD ENGLAND(the BSA logo) .22".
Built in stud

sound moderator and built in stud

synthetic stock
The action of this rifle is break barrel / spring piston.
The box was just a plain brown box with no large pictures or lettering printed on it. I think this is a good idea as the area where I picked the gun up from is not a particularly nice one and has a reputation for being rough, Also I like to keep it quiet when I bring a new rifle home, and a brown box keeps the neighbours guessing when transporting it from the car to my home, I know I then give the game away by going to the car the next day in camouflage gear carrying a rifle slip but hey.
Once I had mounted my scope on this beautiful little rifle it was time to get some practice.
Zeroing the scope took a while because the recoil is a bit harsh  but after a while the recoil calms down and it is a pleasant rifle to shoot.
I took the rifle for a few field tests and found it to be a great little hunter.
The cocking is a little on the stiff side but once you have the knack of it  its relatively easy. I think everybody should learn to shoot using a springer before moving onto a pre-charged pneumatic recoilless rifle and this is a great rifle to learn to shoot with, but the BSA is not just a great beginners rifle, it it great gun for anyone who wants to shoot a springer and at £255 its a bargain.

Rocky APG Jacket

The Rocky APG Jacket comes in three sizes small , medium and large. It is waterproof and made mainly from polyester with a warm comfy fleece lining. The jacket does up using poppers and has two outside pockets that also does up using poppers. A warm hood that pulls tight using a pull string.

The Rocky APG jackets downfalls for me outweigh its good points. This jacket is noisy making a long, hard stalk even harder and most of the time leading to poor results. If it doesn't scare off your quarry by its noise then it will by the way it shines. On sunny days it shows up from across the field worse than a shiny bald head with the sun on it.
I have just taken this jacket out with me again this morning and after getting the pocket caught on a branch it has ripped the pocket. overall this jacket is not worth buying, I'm not going to put the link up for where to buy it because I don't want to be responsible for anyone purchasing this jacket.

Essex Guns Gun Slip

The gun slip actually made by a company called AC Supplies it just has the  Essex Guns label on the front.

This gun slip looks great and has a nice soft thick fleece lining which I think is Great, I don’t know why but I have it in my head that my rifle will perform better if the metal work is warmer.
For me it has the perfect shoulder strap, I have a tendency to be a bit clumsy and not always zip my rifle bag up all the way. The strap on this bag is positioned on the bag so that you have to carry it upside down so there is no way the rifle can fall out.
I found that it does moult a bit but its not something that really affects me as it is only a bit.

Poachers curse

After I recently read the two part series the poachers curse in the countryman's weekly. A tale where a group of poachers one which is caught in a mantrap set by the head keeper and is slowly bleeding to death, the rest find the keeper he shot one then the rest caught him and put his head in the man trap turning it into a guillotine. After being caught, tried and sentenced to be hung, they vowed to haunt the woods on the estate where the keeper set the mantrap and that keeper would not be the last person to die in them woods. This night 150 years later an elderly man see a repeat performance up at the woods and is found dead in the morning.
The Countryman's Weekly
I do not know whether or not this story is true, all though I suspect in to be fiction. I have researched this story and apart from that article in the countryman's weekly I cant find it anywhere.
Never the less, this amazing story inspired me to conduct research in to ghost stories involving poachers or hunters.
I haven't found anything similar to this story or anything as long but I have found two stories both very short.

In Wadhurst (Sussex) at the Beggersbush/Bestbeech Hill crossroad area, there is a haunting manifestation of a man. This ghostly figure in a tan coloured coat is seen to be struggling along the road, his brown sack bulging with his harvest. This is presumed to be that of a poacher.

The other story is set in Myrtle Cottage down the road from Balingey in Perranworth.
Apparently a poacher has been seen dressed in leather gaiters and rough clothing walking through the wall where the cottages front door used to be, he carries a rabbit and heads over to the fireplace.
The next door neighbours have also seen a man of the same description taking a short cut across there front garden towards the cottage.
It is suspected that the poacher is Mr Stephens  (husband to Mrs Stephens and father to a boy who was eleven at the time of his fathers death). Mr stephens was killed while working in the mines.

I do not know if any of these stories are true. I am dissapointed that I cant find any other stories to tell you so I will be continuing my research and I will find more to post at a later date.

Jack Pyke Field Trousers

I love these trousers; the English oak camouflage print is really well done. Jack pyke have managed to get the autumn leaf colour spot on, which is something I have noticed a lot of other companies have not yet managed.
They are made from rip stop material which is always a great when it comes to repairing ripped trousers as they normally only rip in straight lines.
The pockets in these trousers are amazing, massive deep pockets with plenty of room to store your essential kit, Two big back pockets, two deep front pockets and two leg pockets.
The only downside I have found to these are the buckles on either side of the waist band for tightening the waist, but if you are carrying a gun on a rifle sling the buckle rubs against the stock not a problem for me as I have a synthetic stock so I just had to deal with the noise of them knocking together but if I had a wooden stock the rubbing of these buckles on the stock would probably result in scratches in your precious wood work.  To rectify this problem I have simply taped the buckles up with a piece of camouflage duck tape.
To order your pair go to http://www.jackpykeshop.co.uk/ today

Bisley .177 and .22 cleaning kit.

This product is great value for money and excellent if you have a low budget. It caters for both .177 and .22 calibres.
It comes in a polystyrene box with a plastic lid, inside the box you will find a 3 peice cleaning rod, .22 brass brush, a .22 wool mop, a .177 brass brush, a .177 wool mop and a jag..
I have only used the .22 parts as i don't have a .177 rifle as of yet, but these clean my little beauty very well.
A descent piece of kit for anyone on a budget. The only downside I had found was that this kit has a fixed handle, but on the other hand it only costs £9.99. I'm sure Bisley could put bearing into this handle but it would push the price up by five or ten pound.
I think it should have some instructions to cleaning a rifle on it some where so that beginners can see how to clean their rifle, after all if you look on the internet there are forums that tell not to clean your gun at all and
you tube videos that tell you just to clean the outside.

Abbey Gun and rifle Oil.

This oil comes in a can similar to the can 3 in 1 oil comes in, which means you have to cut the nozzle off very small or you will have the oil come out very fast, believe me I have found this out the hard way.

This product has a rust inhibitor in the oil for even more protection.
It seems to work very well indeed, I have a small chip in the paint on my sound moderator exposing a small patch of bare metal and this has not started to rust yet.
I use it weekly on both my rifles, down the barrel and then a wipe over on all metal work. This really is a great gun oil.

Introducing ferrets to children

Do not introduce your ferrets to your children while you are still nip training. To avoid the obvious bite as this will only make the job of introducing the two harder because it will simply install in your child the fear of being bitten by the ferret.
Remember also that Kits have a tendency to bite when being playful.
Never leave your ferret and your children unattended together, even  the sweetest, most docile of ferrets can still become very unpredictable if they feel threatened.

Hunting quotes

"There's a passion for hunting, something deeply inplanted in the human breast." - Charle Dickens
"The only reason I played golf was so I could afford to go hunting and fishing." San Snead.
"Not to open hunting season on the pretext that there is no game, would be as if one gave up celebrating christmas because there was not enough snow to go by sliegh to midnight mass".
"If some animals are good at hunting others are suitable for hunting then god must clearly like hunting."
"One does not hunt in order to kill, on the contrary one kills ion order to have hunted"
"All the sounds of the valley run together into one great echo, a song that is sung by all the spirits of the valley. Only a hunter hears"
"We cannot but pity the boy who has never fired a gun, he is no more humane, while his education has been sadly neglected"
"The pleasure of the sportsman is in the chase, is measured by the intelligence of the game and its capability to elude pursuit and in the labour involved in the capture"

"I knew colding and outside myself, that I could shoot a rifle on game as well as any son of bitch that ever lived, like hell i could"

Badger Cull

Bovine TB.

The problem of Bovine TB in cattle has risen rapidly and there is evidence to show that if the disease was to be controlled in badgers it would reduce the disease in cattle.

Badgers have been a protected species since The 1973 Badger Act and are also protected under European legislation.
Up to 30% of badgers in some areas in the South West and in the West Midlands are infected with Bovine TB.
Infected Badgers excrete vast numbers of infectious terbercle bacilla in the agricultural environment.
Badgers suffer a very painful and protracted death due to Bovine TB and a cull of infected badgers would actually be more humane than leaving them to die from this disease (which the opponents to a cull would have by just using vaccinations).

Effects.

Bovine TB is tested by a skin test if ther animal reacts to the test, it have then tested positive to Bovine TB and is sent to be slaughtered.
The disease doesn't show any symptoms until it is in its advanced stages and symptons can be any of the following:

  • Emaciation,
  • Lethargy,
  • Weakness,
  • Anorexia,
  • Low grade fever,
  • Pneumonia with a cronic moist cough,
  • Lymph node enlargement may also be present.
Mainly affecting cattle this disease can be transmitted to any warm-blooded animal and in certain conditions can affect humans.

As well Badgers Bovine TB can be passed on by deer.
Ferret owners who work there animals in infected areas and dog walkers who also use infected areas should be careful as both can contract the disease.

What Will It Cost?

In 1991 there were 655 cattle that tested positive to Bovine Tb, in 2010 more than 28,500 tested positive with a 25,000 of them being slaughtered to the cost of 90 million pounds in compensation payments.
If the disease is left to run its course Bovine TB will cost 1 Billion pounds of taxpayers money in the next ten years.

Badger Cull.

There are two areas of England where badger cull trials are to be held under very strict licencing laws. The government have not descided the two areas for the cull yet. The idea of this cull in to eradicate the disease and not the badger.

The government hope to reduce Bovine TB by 16%.
Caroline Spellman said "There is no alternative but to approve culls, in an attempt to reduce the number of cattle contracting Bovine TB". Farming and Vetinary associations are also supporting the cull.
Oponents to the cull reject the Government claimes that the culls are science-led wanting vaccinatios and said it would incur policing and legal bills of millions of pounds as protestors target the cull sites and the plans are challenged in court.
There have been previous trial that show a cull cuts Bovine TB.

Vaccinations.

The national Trust and the Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) are both Running seperate Vaccination trials.
The national Trust's programme is being run at their own 20square Km Killerton Estate near Exeter.

The badgers will be caught  using live traps, injected with licenced BCG vaccine then marked (so they dont get the vaccine twice) and then released.
In feild trials of the vaccine  reduced Bovine TB by 73.8%.
John Kittow the tenant farmer of the Killerton  Estate who has been barred from selling cattle in six out of the last ten years due to Bovine TB said "A cull is still needed to as part of a package of measures to bring Bovine TB under control".

FERA are using ultra-muscular injections of BCG in a 100km square area near Stroud  in Gloustershire.
The aim is to maintain FERA capability to vaccinate badgers and give training to people applying for vaccine licences.
For information on courses go to:
www.fera.defra.gov.uk/wildlife/ecologyManagement/bvdp/bagderVaccinationTrainingCourse.cfm

After reviewing all the evidence I have seen I am wondering why the government is opting for a cull to reduce Bovine TB by 16 % when field trial in the vaccine have proved to reduce the disease by upto 73.8%. I'm no scientist but by my calculations a combination of a cull and the vaccines would reduce Bovine TB by 89.8% that's almost 90%. That's a much better result than 16%and will leave plenty of badgers in the wild for the species to survive.

Napier Gun Cleaner

This comes in a fairly large can so it last for quite a while as you you don't need to use a lot.It has a rust inhibitor which is always great, with more to help fight the monster that is rust you really cant complain. It has a short straw to help spray directly into your barrel. It didn't all go through the barrel the first time I used it as I was a bit too overenthusiastic and pushed right down. Once I rectified this and pressed lighter it all went down the barrel. If it doesn't go straight done the barrel its nothing to complain about this magic can of cleaner will clean any part of your rifle including the wooden or tactical stock.
I would recommend this to anyone with a gun it really is great stuff and an essential piece for any cleaning kit.
Oils, Cleaners, Cleaning Material Etc

Fuzzie Buddies Ferret Formula

I love this stuff it is fantastic, if I open up my ferret court, the ferrets are out and running around but if I put y ferret box there, they jump straight because they have associated the ferret box with ferret formula.
I use it together with a dog training clicker and now they also associate the noise of the clicker with the ferret formula.
I use it when clipping their claws and for trips to the vets, i have used it at bath time. It great for distracting ferret while you get on with the task at hand.
An extra plus to the ferret formula is that it is oil based so it helps to lubricate the throat which helps with bringing up furballs.
It also helps keep a nice coat.

Desiderius Erasmus - Hater of Hunting.

Desiderius Erasmus was born in Rotterdam on 28th of October 1466 and he died on the 12th of July 1536. He is also known as Erasmus of Rotterdam.

He was the author of "praise of folly" and the "handbook of a christian knight"(Neither of which I have read or intend to read).
His main interests were Christian Philosophy and Renaissance Humanism.
Desiderius also influenced some pretty important people Lord Chancellor Sir Thomas More and Martin Luther to name just a few.( not the Martin Luther (King) we all know, this Martin Luther was a german priest and an iconic figure of the protestant reformation).
After researching this man, I found it very hard to beleive that this well respected and highly educated person could say something as uneducated as the following:

"They take unbelievable pleasure in the hideous blast of the hunting horn and the baying of the hounds. Dogs dung smells sweet as cinnamon to them"

Right im going to break this quote down into three sections to get my point across.

"They take unbeleivable pleasure in the hideous blast of the hunting horn"  The hunting horn is used in orchestras as in instrument and is also refered to as the Furst-pless-horn. It was also once used by the composer Bach. Its original use was to give out clear signals over the noise of the hunt.

"Baying of the hounds"  A pack of hounds will bay to alert the other dogs in the pack and their Master to the fact that they have found their prey. I would also presume that it is a tactic imbedded deep in the dogs genes to bay as an attempt to strike fear into their prey causing it to slip up or make a mistake.

"Dogs dung smells sweet as cinnamon to them" No matter what is wrong with your sence of smell, dogs dung is dogs dung. No one in their right mind will ever tell you it smells as sweet as cinnamon. Dogs dung only smells like one thing S***.

Parker Hale Cleaning Rod

To look at this rod appears better than most on the market and is actually very well built, I like the fact it has bearings in the handle. The handle stays still while the rod and attachment spins inside your rifled barrel. It definetely makes things alot easier while cleaning your gun.

All in all i am very impressed with this the .22 cleaning rod fits nicely in my rifles barrel making cleaning easier.

Im going to rate this product a five out of five. im going to put an extra picture up so you can see the handle but i do seem to be having a few problems with my camera but if you bare with me as soon as i can i will put better quality pictures up.

VFG Cleaning Pellets.

The idea of these pellets is that every time you go for a shoot, be it plinking targets in the garden or an all-day hunting session you put one of these little white pellets in the breach of your rifle and fire it, simple as that, on its way it picks up any lead particals or dirt and takes them out the end with it.

For a full clean you need to soak two of them in gun oil and put them through the barrel the same way as before. Then keep firing the pellets through until they come out white clean and oil free. If you do not own a pellet trap do not use these you will not find them to no how clean they are coming out.

I was very impressed with the idea of the VFG cleaning pellets and they come in a handy little box to that fits neatly inside the pocket on my rifle slip.

Upon using the pellets how ever i was far less than impressed, I felt they were not intended to be used with my rifle, although it is not stated in the instruction not to use these with a break barrel springer, but when firing it sounded very similar if not the same as dry firing a rifle ( something which can be very damaging to the internal parts of the rifle. I do not intend to damage my pride and joy so I have not used them since.

On the other hand though i feel it is a very clever idea, one that with development could revolutionize gun cleaning. I imagine these would work wonders for cleaning pre charged pneumatic rifles.

I'm going to give item a one out five and would really like the chance to review this item again if it gets developed further.
